Located at the tip of Loop Head Peninsula in County Clare, Loop Head Lighthouse is one of 70 lighthouses operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights around the coast of Ireland. It overlooks part of the wide entry to the Shannon Estuary which has had an aid to navigation beacon since 1670. The present tower, which dates from 1854, was converted to electric operation in 1971 and automated in 1991.
Loop Head is one of three locations in Ireland that broadcast a DGPS signal, which improves the accuracy and integrity of the GPS navigation and position-fixing systems used by mariners.
