‘De Wachter’ is a mill museum in northern Drenthe village of Zuidlaren, situated on the canal to the Zuidlaardermeer.
It is a windmill (built in 1851) by which grains and spices are ground. In addition, there is an oil mill where linseed oil is beaten. If there is insufficient wind it can fall back on power by a steam engine. The mill houses 12 steam engines, a blacksmith, a traditional bakery, a baker, a millwright tools museum and a grocery store dating from 1890 (once run by four generations of the family Timmer Noordlaren). The clog factory of Roelof Westerhof from Tynaarlo was transferred to De Wachter. On Saturday there are clog making demonstrations. Furthermore, since 2008 the old stelmakerij (carpentry workshop) of the brothers. Dijkhuizen from Gieten is operational. The museum also has a portable ‘steamlocomobile’ and a steam tractor. The objective is to demonstrate everything in working order.
