Aveiro, Church of Sao Goncalinho
Portugal

With an irregular hexagonal plane, it was built during the first quarter of the 18th century (1714). In honor of the patron saint, a very curious annual party is held, which is one of the most characteristic of Aveiro.

Here is held one of the most beloved parties of the people of the Beira-Mar neighborhood. It takes place in the Chapel of S. Gonçalinho on the Sunday closest to the 10th of January and during it promises are paid to the Saint throwing kilos of sweet cavacas from the dome to the public.

Another ritual of the party, performed in the evening inside the chapel, is the delivery of the branch. It is a branch of artificial flowers, preserved for many years with religious care. The S. Gonçalinho party also includes Dança dos Mancos, a ritual also performed inside the small chapel. This dance is performed by a group of men who, pretending to be lame and physically disabled, move round, limping and dancing to the sound of the songs that echo in the chapel.

The party is held in honor of São Gonçalo, known in that neighborhood as S. Gonçalinho. He was born in 1190 in Arriconha, near Guimarães, gaining fame as a matchmaker saint when he preached in the parish of Aboadela do Marão where, as a good parish priest, he wanted to sacrament couples who lived in immoral situations.

S. Gonçalo died in the middle of the 13th century. His cult expanded, quickly reaching Aveiro, more precisely in the Beira-Mar neighborhood.

In this neighborhood, he is given healing powers in bone diseases and in solving marital problems.
