Braga, Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, aerial view
Portugal

This Catholic sanctuary dedicated to Senhor Bom Jesus is an architectural-landscape ensemble made up of a church, a stairway where the Via Sacra do Bom Jesus develops, an area of forest (Parque do Bom Jesus), some hotels and a funicular ( Bom Jesus Elevator). It was elevated to a minor basilica on July 5, 2015. Its peculiar disposition served as inspiration for other constructions, as for example the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Lamego, and the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in the city of Congonhas, in Minas Gerais, in Brazil.

It is classified as a National Monument and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The period after the Council of Trent gave rise to the sacred hills scattered over the hills of Piedmont and Lombardy, where the influence of S. Carlos Borromeo, a friend of Blessed Bartolomeu dos Mártires with whom he had a very serious spiritual communion and, above all, shared a commitment to fight and pursue the objectives outlined by the Council of Trent for the consequent Catholic Reformation. Monte Sacros these that were recognized, in 2003, World Heritage by UNESCO: In Piedmont (Belmonte, Crea, Domodossola, Griffa, Oropa, Orta and Varallo Sesia), in Lombardy (Ossuccio and Varese).

The Portuguese sacred mountains, instruments for the implementation of a systematic catechesis program, are also inspired by the Tridentine ordinations and fit perfectly with the idea of pilgrimage, where inspiring elements cannot be missing: a devotional path along the hillsides , a peaceful and isolated environment, a presence of structures, a monumental quality, through chapels and fountains, covered with sculptures or paintings of highly expressive art, with scenes that evoke the Way of the Cross and the different moments of Christ's passion. There are also others dedicated to Maria where the biblical moments of her life are represented, in varied chapels and in an expressive way in different forms of art from painting to sculpture.
