An autumn afternoon, and shortly after crossing Oakham Common we arrived at the Chatley Heath Semaphore Tower. This octagonal tower was built as part of the Admiralty semaphore chain which relayed messages from Portsmouth to London between 1822 and 1847. It is the best preserved remaining tower and has a working semaphore mast.
