Immigrant Chinese traders and laborers inhabited parts of Jakarta in the 1600s. The community was situated in ghettos outside the city walls after the massacre in 1740. The area still retains Chinese ambiance with many temples and markets. It is a densely populated area with a honeycomb of alleyways.
