Graufthal, Rock Houses, Les Maisons Troglodytes
Alsace

From far you can see the red sandstone rocks of Graufthal. Here the sandstone is made up from layers of very different geological hardness. Some layers got washed out so that a huge overhang could form. In medieval timest he Benedictian nuns oft he nearby abbey have used this overhangs to store fire wood and the like. In the 18th century forest workers and day laborers have built there tiny blue houses there. They were called Troglodytes – cave dwellers.
