Guarda's defensive system included vast walls torn cyclically by monumental gates, strategically located in view of the opening of the large circulation routes that put the city in direct contact with the outside: with Covilhã and above all with Castile, via Almedina and with Celorico and starting from here with the legendary Estrada da Beira, one of the great roads of Portugal in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, which led from Celorico to Coimbra and Lisbon.
