Makam I Danyal Mosque Tarsus Vr Mersin 312
Turkey
It is next to Kubat Pasha Madrasah, the old museum building, in downtown Tarsus District, Mersin. As a result of the excavation studies done here, a bridge and the structure of a shrine on the northeastern part of the bridge were revealed. There is a heptagram relief on the stone block placed over the southern window of the eastern face of the structure. Moreover, a cradle-vaulted structure was revealed on the east part of the shrine. The mosque built over the symbolic shrine belonging to Prophet Daniel in 1857 was renamed as Makam-ı Danyal Mosque (literally: Daniel’s Mosque) due to the sacred shrine. Despite the fact that there is little written information about the life of prophet Daniel, who is respected by Muslims, Christians and Jews alike, oral tradition includes numerous myths about him. Based on the myths that have been retold for centuries, it is believed that prophet Daniel is buried in Tarsus.
