Beethoven in Mechelen
Belgium

This statue on a quiet square in the the Van Beenhoven street in the historical city of Mechelen shows the roots of Beethoven in Mechelen.  On the left hand side, you can see the older figure which represents Lodewijk Van Beethoven, Ludwig Van Beethoven's grandfather, who was born in Mechelen in 1712. On the right hand side, you can see the younger figure which represents Ludwig Van Beetoven who was inspired by his grandfather.

The text at the bottom of the statue shows the following additional information. The first text is the original text in Dutch, the second one an English translation:

DUTCH
"Lodewijk Van Beethoven
Mechelen 1712-Bonn 1773

"Ludwig Van Beethoven
Bonn 1770-Wenen 1827
Grootvader Lodewijk is mijn grote voorbeeld.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
"Lodewijk Van Beethoven
Mechelen 1712-Bonn 1773
As a dedicated singer and music director of the Elector of Cologne, I'm generally valued and respected in the German city of Bonn .
The basis of my successful musical career, however, is in my home town of Mechelen. At the age six, I start my singing studies at the choire school of the St. Rombouts Cathedral. My love for music continues to grow and will also inspire my talented grandson Ludwig.
Are the seeds of my masterful compositings located in this old Dijlestad? "

"Ludwig Van Beethoven
Bonn 1770-Vienna 1827
Grandfather Lodewijk is my role model. From him I inherited the boundless passion for music. I was not yet three years old when he died, but his portrait I cherish and I take with me everywhere.
They call me a melancholic and difficult child. Perhaps the lack of my beloved grandfather weighs too heavy on my child shoulders.
Or is it the enthusiasm of music that constantly goes through my head and makes me create?"

More About Belgium

Belgium is a country in northwest Europe. Founding member of the European Union, it covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres and has a population of about 10.7 million. From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, it was a prosperous centre of commerce and culture. Upon its independence, Belgium eagerly participated in the Industrial Revolution and, at the end of the nineteenth century, possessed several colonies in Africa. Today, Belgium's strongly globalized economy and its transportation infrastructure are integrated with the rest of Europe. Its location at the heart of a highly industrialized region helps made it 2007 the world's 15th largest trading nation. Cultural life is nowadays concentrated within each language community and a variety of barriers have made a shared cultural sphere less pronounced. Anyway, the region corresponding to today's Belgium has seen the flourishing of major artistic movements that have had tremendous influence on European art and culture.
