Montesclaros Ext
Northern Spain

Here is venerated the Virgin Montesclaros of great devotion among the people of Campoo.

The monastery is located in a beautiful forest area near Los Carabeos municipality of Valdeprado del Rio.

Its origin is in a cave church beneath the present one where there is an image of the Virgin that, according to tradition, was brought by a Christian fugitive by the year 1000 and hidden in a cave.

Forgotten for some time was found years later in a miraculous way by a shepherd who saw one of his bulls kneeling in front of the cave.
The image of the Virgin and Child was moved several times to a church in Los Carabeos but miraculously always returned to his cave so it was decided to build there a small chapel.

The present church was built over the former. This one and the convent are dated on XVIIth century.

Beside the monastery there is a hostel run by the Dominican monks
