Páteo de S. Miguel is an architectural ensemble that includes the Paço dos Condes de Basto, the Eugénio de Almeida Archive and Library, the Carriage Collection and the S. Miguel Chapel. It also houses the headquarters of the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation.
Paço dos Condes de Basto was built in the Roman-Visigoth period, it was Moorish Alcazar and seat of the Military Order of S. Bento de Calatrava. Great figures of the History of Portugal passed by, such as D. Afonso Henriques, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, D. Sebastião, D. Filipe II and D. João IV. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1922.
Primitive Moorish alcácer and residence of the kings of the Afonsina dynasty. Based on the Roman-Gothic-Muslim wall, it preserves architectural remains of the Gothic-Manueline-Mudejar and Renaissance styles, these enhanced with the mural paintings of the ground halls, in which one can see panels of the taking of Tunis, in 1535, by Emperor Carlos V, an expedition that had the contribution of a powerful Portuguese fleet commanded by Infante D.
