For more than 50 years, The Wallkill Valley Railroad brought produce and passengers from the Ulster County farms to New York City. By 1937, however, all passenger service had been suspended, and the last freight train took its final run in 1977. For six years, the railroad sat abandonded and unused. Then, in 1983, organizers began the work of converting it to a walking/biking/horseback trail. By April 1991, it was up and running, covering 27 miles from Gardiner in the south to Rosendale in the north. Along the way are numerous vistas, including this one with a view of Sky Top Tower.
