Fairy Lochs, Scotland
Scotland

The Fairy Lochs are a group lochans located near Gairloch in the Scottish Highlands. They can be accessed by a short hillwalk from the Shieldaig hotel.

On the 13th June 1945, a B-24 Liberator bomber (#42-95095 of the 66th Squadron 93rd Bomb Group) en route from Prestwick to the US via Iceland crashed at the Fairy Lochs, possibly due to mechanical malfunction. All 15 crew and passengers died. Wreckage was scattered over a wide area during the impact, still there today. A memorial plaque mark the location of the crash, first installed in 1987 and upgraded to a more durable one in 1991.
