In the Pindaya cave, further down toward the back of the cave is a beautiful statue of Buddha meditating with his weight supported by the coils of a naga (snake) with a flared hood to shield him from above.
It tells the story of the Buddha and Mucalinda, the serpent king. As the Buddha sat beneath a tree engaged in meditation, Mucalinda arose from the roots of the tree to shield the Buddha from a storm that was just beginning to form.
