Tahune Forest AirWalk, Geeveston, Tasmania, Australia
Tasmania

Located near the 1.6-million-hectare Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area, the Tahune Forest Reserve and the Tahune Airwalk is situated in the Huon River Valley in Southern Tasmania. The walkway allows visitors to stroll the forest at the elevation of the forest canopy, 20 to 30 meters above the forest floor. The Airwalk is about 620 meters in length and offers panoramic views of the Huon River.

The forest below is known for Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii), capable of reaching an age of 3,000 years. A slow growing tree that occasionally reaches 30 meters in height. It is native to the area, prized for its wood and protected by law. Preferring moist conditions for growth, Huon Pine is primarily found in Tasmania’s temperate rainforests and commonly grows with Sassafras, Myrtle, Celery Top and Blackwood along riverbanks and swamps.

At the time this panorama was made, the Airwalk was administered and managed by Forestry Tasmania now called Sustainable Timber Tasmania which is a Tasmanian government business enterprise. The Airwalk was opened in 2001 and threatened by wildfire in 2019. It is a one hour and 40 minute drive from Hobart (70km, 43mi) to the Airwalk. There is a visitor center and cafe on site and of course, a gift a shop.
