The Chancel, Hardham Church, West Sussex
England

St Botolph's Church, Hardham, West Sussex

The Church at Hardham in West Sussex dates to about 1100. It contains one of the earliest and most complete set of Norman wall paintings in England. They were covered in whitewash in the 13th century and only uncovered in 1866. They include scenes of the Agnus Dei (above the chancel arch), the baptism and infancy of Christ on the nave walls, the earliest known depiction of St George in England (in the north-west corner of the nave), and Adam and Eve, the Passion and Resurrection, and the Apostles in the chancel. St Botolph's is one of the Sussex churches of the 'Lewes Group', all known for their murals. Others include Clayton, Amberley, Coombes and Plumpton.
