The main stairs at Elcho Castle, Perthshire
Scotland

Elcho Castle is a 16th century fortified tower house adjacent to the River Tay. It was built by the Wemyss family as a country retreat around the time of the Protestant Reformation. This was still a turbulent period hence the requirement for a comfortable residence that was also easily defendable.
