Whitney Glacier penitentes
California

Whitney Glacier, one of the seven glaciers presently on Mt. Shasta, was also the first one discovered in the Continental US in 1870.  This view looks down at the main extent of it, being the longest glacier in the state of California, views of Shastina as well as the true top of Mt. Shasta.

Within this view facing the large ice mass is a type of snow & ice formation called penitentes.  Though not as impressive as ones found in the Andes Mountains, these formations were first described by Charles Darwin & consist of needle-like mounds of bladed ice found in high altitudes under certain conditions.  These ones were about three feet in height & were rounded down in appearance, more impressive ones can reach nearly 15 feet or higher!  Such formations have also been found on Juniper's moon Europa as well as Pluto.
