The Batuco Wetland is located in the province of Chacabuco, in the north-west sector of the Metropolitan Region. It is the most important in the Region, both for its size and for the abundance and diversity of birds it houses. The Batuco Lagoon is one of the most important components of the Wetland and is characterized by a high concentration of resident and migratory aquatic birds. Online information sources such as eBird report a richness of 144 species in different conservation categories. Given the importance of this place, several legal instruments have tried to protect the Batuco Lagoon, however, threats have continued to degrade this important place. During the first semester of 2020, the San Carlos de Maipo Foundation submitted a file to the Ministry of the Environment for the Batuco Lagoon to be declared a Nature Sanctuary, which opens up hope for it to be considered a site under official protection.
