Overlooking Crater Lake, Oregon from near the Cleetwood Cove parking lot on a moderately haze afternoon. The park has had its share of bizarre mysteries & the disappearance of Samuel "Sammy" Boehlke is no exception. On October 14, 2006, eight year old Sammy & his father Kenneth had arrived from Portland, Oregon & were staying several miles north at a rental cabin at the Diamond Lake Resort. They pulled off 1/4 mile east from the main Cleetwood Cove parking area to this location. The two then got out to play some hide & seek on this cinder slope where Sammy saw something yellow he thought would be gold. As it was getting dark, Kenneth started walking back towards the car hinting the two of them return back to their cabin but Sammy refused to come down the top of the slope. Kenneth then chased up after him to which Sammy thought it was a game, staying 50 feet ahead of him. He disappeared somewhere over the top & by the time Kenneth had climbed up Sammy had vanished.
After a search force of nearly 200 personnel were quickly assembled, they had scoured nearly six square miles of the area including the severe drops down to the lake. On some days there was intermittent snow & after a week of searching with dogs, helicopters, & heat-sensing cameras, no trace of Sammy was ever found. He remains missing to this day nearly 15 years later.
