It is the only standing structure of the antique city located in downtown Tarsus District. There used to exist the “Mountain Gate” and “Sea Gate” of the city walls during the Byzantine Period. It is told that the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra entered into the city through this gate when she came to meet General Antonius. As a result of this, the gate on the seaside is called the “Cleopatra Gate”. On the other hand, Evliya Çelebi makes mention of the same place in his Seyahatname (book of travel) as the “Pier Gate”.
