Confucius Temple
Kaohsiung

Now, Kaohsiung City has both a new and an old Confucius Temples. The old Confucius Temple was built in 1684 by the first magistrate of Fongshan, Yang, Fang-Sheng. Due to natural disasters and damage it has been rebuilt a number of times. It reached the peak of its development around the end of the 19th Century. It was seriously neglected during the Japanese Occupation, leaving only the "Chongsheng Shrine". This is now a Class 3 Building of Historical Interest and has been preserved within the Chiu-Cheng Elementary School.  The new Confucius Temple was completed in 1976 with an area of 1,800 m2. The temple is built reflecting the style of the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong Province, which includes the Wanren Wall, a pond and a arch bridge, Minlun Hall, Li Gate, Yilu Arch, Lingsing Gate, Tacheng Gate, Tacheng Hall, the east and west chambers, and Chongsheng Shrine.  The Tacheng Hall that forms the main building imitates the Hall of Supreme Harmony of the Beijing Forbidden City.  It is a magnificent structure that conveys the full majesty and wisdom of the old Confucian philosophy.  The Chinese people consider Confucius to be a great sage.  September 28th is Teacher's Day, which marks Confucius' birthday, and it is celebrated with a solemn ceremony conducted according to ancient rituals.
