In Dover Plains, NY, a quiet village about 35 minutes east of Poughkeepsie near the Connecticut border, there is a geologic formation called the Dover Stone Church. It is a fissure in a huge chunk of rock through which a stream flows.
As you approach the Stone Church, there is this meadow with two ponds, which makes for a perfect picnic spot, changing the nature of the event from "just" a hike to see a spectacular rock formation to a pleasant afternoon's diversion.
