2011年3月11日は日本人にとって、普通の人々の生活の価値観が激震した日。東日本大震災が起きた日である。安藤榮作は家族とともに東日本大震災の後、様々な道を辿って現在の奈良県天理市に移り、アトリエを構えた。「何故、福島で被災してから奈良に来たのですか？」と安藤に聞くと。「奈良にはいい仏像が沢山あるから」と。その言葉を聞いて私は「彼の魂の向かいたい所」が「奈良」だったのではないかと考えた。そして、旅する民俗学者・宮本常一が監修した「円空とアイヌ」（1965年日経映像・日本の詩情）のドキュメンタリー映像を思い出した。何故かというと単に安藤が円空賞を取ったからというわけではなく、江戸時代に日本を旅した円空も仏像を彫ることで仏教を広め、円空の魂の向かうままに旅した。その円空は最果てのアイヌの人たちが暮らす北海道まで辿り着く。
アイヌ人たちは円空に向かって、きっとこう言っただろう。
「私たちにはカムイがいます。だから円空さんの仏教には帰依できないが、あなたの人柄とあなたの仏像は素晴らしい」と。事実、江戸時代の古文書にはアイヌの民は鮭などを円空に奉納したとある。
奈良に移ってから驚異的なペースで、多くの作品を安藤は制作する。現代の日本社会に対して、作品の礫を投げ続けた。また彼は福島原発の訴訟を関西の仲間たちと起こし、戦っている。そんな戦う姿勢を維持している安藤さんとアトリエで語り合った。
「優れた彫刻作品は作品の表層ではなく、内部にエネルギーのラインが見えるんだよ！」作品の中のエネルギーのラインとは何か。作品の生命力なのだろうか？安藤は洋の東西を問わず、実によく彫刻を研究している。そして作品を判断する基準がどうも作品の中のエネルギーのラインの存在らしい。彼自身は木材を斧で叩きながら作品を作る。その様子を眺めていると彼の斧からエネルギーを樹木に注入しているようにしか思えないのだ。彼は粗削り用の斧から仕上げ用の斧を何種類か使いながら制作していく。
ところで作家は自分の作品を作るために独自の制作のシステムを作るとともに、制作を通した彫刻史（美術史）も生み出していくのではないか？安藤の制作から生まれた彼独特の彫刻史。彼の彫刻史の底に流れているのは、福島の生活だったり、政府による原子力発電の政策への怒りだったり、様々だろう。
彼のアトリエを去るときに思い出した言葉がある。以前の奈良での個展会場で聞いた彼の言葉だ。
「いろんな思いを抱えながら、この10年を生きてきたけど、現在の自分が言いたいのは全てを『赦す』ということなんだ」という言葉だ。
「赦す」という言葉に至った安藤榮作の作品世界を京都場の空間で目撃したい。

The eight islands of Japan sprang into existence through Divine Intervention.The first two gods who came into existence were Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the Exalted Male and Exalted Female.
