Esposende, Barca Do Lago
Portugal

This was one of the best places to cross the river, from remote Roman times to medieval times, where pilgrims on pilgrimage moved to Santiago de Compostela. For this purpose, the “barge” connected the two banks in a constant back and forth, as there were people to cross. On both banks there were boatmen, who answered travelers' requests, of any social condition. But this “lake” does not favor the region with only a good point of crossing the river. The clean and flowing waters are fertile in fish, and fishing here has always been abundant and profitable. The place is so pleasant that the noble houses have settled here. There were residences of families emblazoned on either side. Around the lake there was activity all year round. Legend has it that in the century. XIII an image of Our Lady appeared on a fishing net, which the people nicknamed “Nossa Senhora do Lago”. To house this image of the Virgin, a chapel was erected on the right bank of the river, from where it began to protect the travelers. Tradition tells that, after the appearance of the Virgin, the boatmen of Cavado passed, in this place, and out of thanks to the protection that the Lady received, not to charge passage of the river. There were boatmen on both sides, always ready at the request of pilgrims or passersby. The oral tradition says that it was "impersonating God", under the protection of the Virgin.
