The Holy Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir-Volynsky is the only monument in Volhynia that has come down to us since the times of the Old Russian state. Great-grandson of Vladimir Monomakh, Mstislav Izyaslavich, who was a prince in Vladimir, and later a great prince of Kiev, built a new church in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. The consecration of the church was after the painting in 1160. After consecration the church became a cathedral, continuing the history of the first episcopal chair of the Volyn diocese based on these lands in 992.
