Idanha a Velha, Archaic oil mill, extraction hall, Portugal
Europe

This is an archaic oil mill, belonging to the biggest owner of Idanha-a-Velha, it was operated by specialized personnel, and made the extraction of the oil coming from several regions like Ribatejo, Alentejo, Serra do Montemuro, but mainly from the northern mountains, as Barroso's.

It is one of the most exquisite examples found in Portugal, in which the quality of the materials and the elobaração of the forms stand out, namely of the alguergues, furnace block, decantation chambers and floors.

The cattle that operated the greyhounds were from the agricultural house itself.

The rods of the presses were pulled out of the latifundio's montados and transported on wheels pulled by several joints of oxen.

This mill model was the most common in the country in the middle of this century. In 1939, there were 3,737 greyhound mills, ie 45%. In 1948 the number of rod presses was 4,705, corresponding to 41%. In the last year that he worked this mill, in 1959, he produced 19,000 liters of oil.

There are two possibilities for the construction date of this mill: XVIII (a granite has the date of 1755 engraved), or the end of the XIX century (a lamp with the date 1895 engraved)

Today it is divided into three rooms:

room of the bins of pio (bins to store the olive and granite pee for the grinding)

bagaceira room (settling chambers)

The haystacks (one of which is the service door) served as a shelter for oil mills and animals that moved greyhounds.

More About Europe

Europe is generally agreed to be the birthplace of western culture, including such legendary innovations as the democratic nation-state, football and tomato sauce. The word Europe comes from the Greek goddess Europa, who was kidnapped by Zeus and plunked down on the island of Crete. Europa gradually changed from referring to mainland Greece until it extended finally to include Norway and Russia.Don't be confused that Europe is called a continent without looking like an island, the way the other continents do. It's okay. The Ural mountains have steadily been there to divide Europe from Asia for the last 250 million years. Russia technically inhabits "Eurasia".Europe is presently uniting into one political and economic zone with a common currency called the Euro. The European Union originated in 1993 and is now composed of 27 member states. Its headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium.Do not confuse the EU with the Council of Europe, which has 47 member states and dates to 1949. These two bodies share the same flag, national anthem, and mission of integrating Europe. The headquarters of the Council are located in Strasbourg, France, and it is most famous for its European Court of Human Rights. In spite of these two bodies, there is still no single Constitution or set of laws applying to all the countries of Europe. Debate rages over the role of the EU in regards to national sovereignty. As of January 2009, the Lisbon Treaty is the closest thing to a European Constitution, yet it has not been approved by all the EU states. Text by Steve Smith.
