Hidden Cave is a small cave in the remote Nevada desert that has provided archaeologists with important information about the lifeways of Nevada's ancient inhabitants. The cave was used for most of the Holocene, but unlike many other caves, it seems to have been used for storage rather than as a place to live.
This panorama shows the inside of the cave and a couple of the archaeological trenches that were excavated there and preserved for the posterity. The neat walls surrounding the viewer are the meticulously excavated sides of the archaeological trench. Look carefully to see the layers of aeolian loess that have collected through the centuries. These layers allow archaeologists to associate artifacts with one another and to date the progression of prehistoric use of the cave.
