Gigapixel view from the summit of Mt. Hilton (elev. 8,933') in the Trinity Alps Wilderness near Weaverville, California. The peak is the second highest of the Trinity Alps & third highest in the Klamath Mountains after Mt. Eddy. Great views in all directions of the Red, White, & Green Trinities w/ the nearby peaks of Thompson Peak, Wedding Cake, Sawtooth Mountain, Little Granite Mountain, & Caesar Peak. Getting here is arduous from any direction especially with the thick icy snow. One can see Mt. Shasta as the high peak to the northeast, the Yolla Bolla Mountains to the far south, the Central Valley in haze, much of the Klamath Mountains going north & even the distant Pacific Ocean on the western horizon. This area is all comprised of granite, a splitoff of the Sierra Batholith further south as earthquakes & faults transported these mountains to the northwest. There are plenty of alpine lakes as well as a small glacier directly below nearby Thompson Peak.
