以前小豆島に来た時に、はるばるイタリアから移植されたオリーブの老木を見に行った。オリーブは上へ上へとすくすく育つ幹ではなく根元から横へうねりながら広がるように枝を張っていく。細長く白っぽい葉は樹全体の印象を淡くぼんやりと見せる。実を結実させるには、違った種類の二種類のオリーブの木を畑に植える必要があるそうだ。同族だけでは実を結ばないらしい。
