This piece is one of the many striking sculptures by Not Vital currently on display at Yorkshire Sculpture Park as part of of this artist's first major UK exhibition. I was able to capture it as the Bank Holiday Monday crowds thinned out as a sunny afternoon came to an end.
Sited in the walled Gallery Garden, I love this particular piece as it seems so perfectly grounded and at home where it sits. The pitted craters are reminiscent of his previous moon sculptures - though more polished and perfect, while the stainless steel finish reminds me of a giant gazing globe - those chrome balls which were so popular in Victorian stately home gardens - reflecting the character, mood and movement of the skies above.
