I ufredstider var Bornholm, med sin isolerede beliggenhed, overladt til sig selv, og kirken har blandt andet skulle være tilflugtssted mod de gotlandske og vendiske sørøvere, som netop i kirkens bygningsperiode omkring 1165 gjorde Østersøen usikker.
