This conservation unit is composed of sea area and a land formed by a mountain range that penetrates the continent to southwest / northeast, and in its watershed at the end of lindeira municipalities of Niterói and Marica , ending its limits on the RJ-106 highway.
Created by State Law No. 1,901, of November 29, 1991, Sierra Tiririca State Park perimeter was expanded by Decree No. 41266 of April 16, 2008, with the inclusion of high-value areas of the environment such Morro das that swallows and a portion surrounding the Itaipu lagoon, a place with the presence of archaeological sites. His final perimeter was established in State Law No. 5079, of 3 September 2007, the correction was published in the DO of 8 April 2011. It was extended by decree of State No. 43913 of October 29, 2012 with the inclusion of 1,241 hectares, is beginning to have an area of about 3493 hectares.
In addition to the marine and mountain range that gives its name to the unit, three other adjacent areas in the mountains are part of the natural protected area Peset: Morro das Andorinhas, Restinga Center and Dune Itaipu, situated in the oceanic region of Niterói, specifically in Itaipu.
The objectives of its creation: to preserve and protect biodiversity and genetic resources of the territory; promoting environmental sustainability in the use of natural resources, stimulating the integrated development of the region with the help of environmental education; preserve and conserve the local water system, and promote the natural recharge of groundwater; contribute to climate mitigation; minimize the risk of erosion in the region where it operates to protect all animal and plant species and ecosystems to which they belong, the scenic beauty of landscapes, natural monuments, archaeological and other cultural heritage sites encourage and support scientific research of the natural, tangible and intangible, and promote recreational and cultural use of the park, as appropriate, by the company.
