A break in the clouds after a typically mixed autumnal afternoon's weather brightens San Sebastián's famous shell-shaped bay during the golden hour. One of the most shapely and elegant city beaches in Europe, the beach at Donostia / San Sebastián has been a tourist attraction since the nineteeth century.
Standing at the edge of the beach and Plaza de Cervantes is the perfect spot to watch locals and tourists promenade in the early evening before enjoying the host of pintxos and other food and drink which the city is renowned for.
The cryptic lettering etched into the sand (IBI=+P) is drawn daily at low tide to protest at a controversial tax on second properties. Although most tourists have no idea what it stands for, the mysterious-looking inscription must feature in thousands of holiday snaps and videos every year.
