Tarouca, Ucanha Bridge and Tower
Portugal

Traveled along the Varosa River, which is born here, the municipality of Tarouca presents, joining the banks of its main watercourse, several bridges of medieval origin, in places of great scenic beauty.

The most notable is undoubtedly the Ucanha bridge, whose origins probably date back to the Roman period. The proof of its antiquity is to be cited as old even before 1146, in the donation letter from Gouviães by D. Afonso Henriques his Monteiro-Mor, Paio Cortês.

However, in the 12th century, it was built on the forehead of the right bank (where today is the village of Ucanha, then called "village" of the Bridge, Ucanha being the site that started to populate there), an arch provided with its door, and , on top of it, a building to store the tolls charged in that arch by the landlord of couto (the monastery of Salzedas since 1155-1156) to those who entered it, following the Roman route, which is an important road to Lamego, which is why they settled a population of employees charged with collecting tolls, with facilities and houses being built.
