The boat belongs to The Marine & Coastal Environment Management Project and is meant to be used to patrol the Chole Bay Marine Park, off Mafia Island, Tanzania. This is still quite a pristine marine park with an abundance of beautiful live coral and fish. Every visitor who enters the marine park is charged twenty dollars to discourage fishing and encourage conservation. This boat hasn't left the beach for two years. I also saw fishing boats, lobster pots and discarded fishing line tangled in the coral reef. This highlighted for me the tension between the need for the people of Mafia to earn a living (mostly through fishing) and the race against time for conservation a problem facing us worldwide.
