五重塔(ごじゅうのとう)《重要文化財》 千畳閣の隣に建つ五重塔は、和様と唐様を巧みに調和させた建築様式で、桧皮葺の屋根と朱塗りの柱や垂木のコントラストが美しい塔です。高さは27.6m。応永14年(1407年)に建立されたものと伝えられています。内部は完全な唐様で、一般の見学はできませんが、内陣天井に龍、外陣天井には葡萄唐草、来迎壁の表には蓮池、裏には白衣観音像などが極彩色で描かれています。塔内にあった仏像は、明治元年の神仏分離令により、大願寺に遷されました。またこの五重塔が建つ塔の岡は、厳島合戦で陶軍が陣を構えたと伝えられています。
