Urban nucleus municipal headquarters. City located on a river bank. Medieval village of Couto de Ceras of military religious order jurisdiction (order of the Temple), with castle and suburb. Urban layout that fits into a set of urban initiatives from the second half of the century. 13, located on a substantially level ground. Set with regular urban grid defined by two perpendicular axes corresponding to Rua da Corredoura in the direction E./O. and to the Right Streets of Várzea Pequena and Várzea Grande. Nucleus originating in two outskirts of Castelo de Tomar and in the roads that established the connection between the castle and the riverside area. Existence of two functional spaces, represented in the two most important squares: Praça da Ribeira, administrative center, and Praça de São João, a space with a more commercial vocation, which later evolved, as Praça D. Manuel, to administrative and religious civic center of the city. The cadastral structure is characterized by narrow and shallow lots, which result in a current architecture of predominantly two-storey buildings, and more rarely, three-storey buildings. The town has one of the best examples of regular medieval urban fabric, preserving until today the structure defined between the 12th and 16th centuries.
