The 18th century Porta Nova Archway was designed by André Soares and is baroque and neoclassical. The Baroque façade faces outwards from the city and bears the coat of arms of Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança. The neoclassical façade gives the interior and is covered by a statue of Our Lady of Nazaré. There are several theories for this expression. Such as, the fact that the Porta Nova Archway never had a door. As there was no war at that time and as the city was growing beyond the walls, no door was placed in that arch. From then on, the inhabitants of Braga became known as those who do not close the door. So, whenever a Braga inhabitant leaves a door open, he immediately hears "Are you from Braga?
