Snowdrop Paradise is an area within Coltness Woods, Wishaw on the old estate previously owned by Lord Belhaven.
The area was named by locals because of the high proliferation of Snowdrop flowers that appear here each Spring.
Although generally regarded as a "wild" flower, Snowdrops (Galanthus Nivalis) were introduced to the UK sometime around the early 1700's and were not recorded growing wild until 1770.
The "wild" variety can generally be differentiated from the many cultivated varieties as it will always have only one flower per stem.
The Snowdrop is regarded as unlucky to bring into the home and many elderly people refer to them as "death tokens".
