The Upper Gate in Lauda-Königshofen was built in 1494 and served as a watchtower in front of the city of Lauda. Originally the gate was only surrounded by ramparts and palisades, which were replaced by walls from 1630. The actual medieval city wall from 1344 with 10 towers around the city center had been demolished, auctioned and used for other structures by the middle of the 19th century or had to give way to the construction of the railway.
