Nelson is the oldest city on the South Island. It also is the second oldest city of the country. Nelson is a centre of tourism, arts and crafts. Nelson is also a bishop’s see. The crossing of Bridge Street and Trafalgar Street is the centre of the city. On Trafalgar Street just below the Church Steps – sometimes called Cawthron Steps – there are some nice old houses and pubs.
