De St. Plechelmusbasiliek is rond 1150 gebouwd van Bentheimer zandsteen in westfaals-romaanse stijl. De toren werd omstreeks 1240 aan de kerk toegevoegd. Rond 1480 is de romaanse zuidbeuk vergroot en kreeg deze een gotisch uiterlijk. Na 1500 werd de sacristie gebouwd en het priesterkoor in gotische stijl verlengd.
