Potholes at White Pocket, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, Arizona
Arizona
White Pocket is located in a remote, unspoiled and hard to reach sandstone formation in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument near the Arizona-Utah border. This rock formation is a result of soft sediment deformation of a large Jurassic sand dune. Sand deposited from varying sources, moved, cross-bedded and solidified over time creating the banded and stunning color striations. Wind and water erosion farther sculpted the landscape giving to many biomorphic shapes and pools. A visit requires advance outdoor skills and planning to understand the potential hazards of this desert.
