Seymour Narrows is located near Campbell River, British Columbia & contains the former site of Ripple Rock, a underwater mountain that had two peaks w/ one only 2.7 meters below sea level at low tide. The rock was an extreme hazard to passing ships & often caused shipwrecks spanning back to 1875. At least 114 people have died due to shipwrecks from the rock that an operation from 1955 to 1958 involved 75 men to dig a shaft from the island across the way for explosives underneath the rock. The explosion took place on April 5, 1958 at 9:31:02 A.M., removing the top of Ripple Rock down to 14 meters below sea level. The explosion was declared a national historic even in Canada, & one of the largest non-nuclear planned explosions recorded. Seymour Narrows itself is a narrow channel b/w Vancouver Island & Quadra Island, often shifting in fast currents depending on the tides. Sitting here one could watch underwater currents suddenly shoot up in waves & creating whirlpools, or maelstroms flowing downstream (south), though the reverse flow happens at opposite tide. A few boats were passing through, one even shut off its engine & idled swiftly horizontal through the narrows.
