Wairakei is literally a hotspot of geothermal activity some kilometres north of Taupo. It is part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. There are some geothermal tourist attractions in the region. The Wairakei Thermal Valley – unlike some other attractions – is an all natural valley with high geothermal activities. When you visit this valley after a rainy night, you can get very impressive clouds. Sadly the panorama misses out that distinct odour of sulfuric gases.
