Yedikule, aslında adı gibi bir zindan oluşturmak amacı ile değil, Bizans'a misafir gelen kralları ve yabancı sarayların mensuplarını ihtişamlı bir şekilde karşılamak için yapıldı. Türk Tarih Kurumu'nun yaptığı araştırmalara ve elde edilen tarihi verilere göre, başlıkta belirtilen Altın Kapı'yı bir zafer takı olarak dönemin Bizans İmparatoru Theodosius' inşa ettirdi. Theodosiustan sonra tahta geçen oğlu da dört tane yüksek gözlem kulesinden oluşan bir kaleyi kapıile birleştirdi.
Istanbul (historically Byzantium and later Constantinople; see the other names of Istanbul) is the largest city of Turkey and the third largest city in the world. The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
