1820 Settler national monument
South Africa

View from the 1820 Settler National Monument in Grahamstown, South Africa. Grahamstown is a university town in the Eastern Cape, between East London and Port Elizabeth. During the Christmas period, when this photo was taken, the town is very quiet due to the summer holidays. In June, the winter period, the university town transforms completely for the National Arts Festval, often referred to as the Grahamstown festival. A week-long arts festival using pretty much any venue within the town, including the Monument.

The 1820 Settlers national Monument honours the contribution to the South African society made by the British 1820 settlers.

The small white building is Fort Selwyn, named after Captain Selwyn who was responsible for the design and construction of the Fort. The fort was completed by the end of June 1836.
