As stone circles go, the site at Achmore amongst the rugged Lewis landscape is not particularly exciting as almost all the megaliths are toppled and remain partly buried. First discovered during peat clearance in the early-1980s, the circle is about 40 metres in diameter and probably had about 22 stones. Of these, only two remain upright, with 12 others fallen from their sockets and the others missing. Much of the site, which is also known as Callanish XXII, remains mysteriously hidden under the peat bog.
